Root Chakra → Anxiety & Insomnia Free

"To be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul."

- Simone Weil

Why is the root chakra so important?
What is it?

Our root chakra is essential. It is the first chakra and the foundation for the whole body. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is Muladhara and the color is red. It is connected to our sense of groundedness, survival, trust, safety, and security. Think of your "fight or flight" instinct, or the way you manage stress.

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine, or the coccyx. It's physically correlated with the skeletal system, adrenal glands, bowels, legs, and feet. It's related to our feelings of being at home and connected to our bodies and Mother Earth.

When the root chakra is underactive, it expresses via low self-esteem, unmotivation, stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

But when it is overactive, it could manifest as greediness, materialism, hoarding, egotism, or overindulgence.

Those who suffered unstable and traumatic childhoods are at high risk for having an unbalanced root chakra.

When your root chakra is balanced and energy is flowing freely, it's likely you'll feel connected to yourself and others, have a sense of belonging and a strong drive, along with an ability to focus on the present moment.

How can I balance my root chakra?

There are a few simple practices that you can implement, if you're looking to balance and nurture your root chakra.

Eat red foods or root vegetables
Prepare an earthy meal using foods that grow from the soil like potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, or squash. For a sweet treat, make a delicious medley of red fruit like strawberries, raspberries, red apples, or cherries.

Earthing
Get grounded by "earthing" or making skin contact with the surface of the Earth. This can look like walking barefoot or laying down on soft grass. This type of meditation is known to reduce stress and improve sleep, among many other benefits.

Listen to Root Chakra Meditations
This is one of our favorite meditations that we give to clients struggling with an unbalanced root chakra.

Get a Reiki Session
A client recently described a Reiki session with practitioner Carson Watts as, "being held by the Earth." If you need more support balancing your root chakra, his grounding presence may be the perfect match.
